Position Statement: Defining Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) Standards
Issued by the mHBOT Standards Council | Date: October 31, 2025 | Document No.: MHBOT-SC/001 | Status: Foundational Policy Document – Public Reference
Purpose
The mHBOT Standards Council establishes and maintains the baseline operational, safety, and ethical guidelines for Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) within the wellness, longevity, and performance sectors. This position clarifies the distinction between mild and medical hyperbaric oxygen applications and sets forth the scope of practice for non-medical facilities operating up to 2.0 atmospheres absolute (ATA).
Definition of Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) is the use of pressurized environments at levels up to 2.0 ATA (commonly 1.3–1.5 ATA) with ambient or moderately enriched air for general wellness, recovery, and health optimization purposes in non-medical settings.
Key Characteristics:
- Pressure Range: Up to 2.0 ATA (commonly 1.3–1.5 ATA)
- Oxygen Delivery: Ambient air or moderately enriched air (not 100% oxygen)
- Application: Wellness, performance enhancement, and general health support
- Setting: Non-medical wellness facilities, spas, athletic recovery centers
- Oversight: Professional operators trained in mHBOT-specific protocols
Differentiation from Medical HBOT
| Feature | mHBOT (Wellness) | Medical HBOT |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure | Up to 2.0 ATA | 2.4 – 6 ATA |
| Oxygen | Ambient or enriched air | 100% medical-grade oxygen |
| Purpose | Wellness & performance | Medical treatment |
| Prescription | Not required | Required |
| Setting | Wellness facilities | Medical facilities |
Core Standards
- Equipment Standards: All chambers must meet manufacturing and safety specifications
- Operational Protocols: Standard operating procedures for session management
- User Screening: Pre-session health assessments and contraindication screening
- Professional Training: Operator certification and continuing education requirements
- Safety Compliance: Regular equipment maintenance and emergency preparedness
Scope of Practice
mHBOT is positioned as a wellness modality for general health support. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. Facilities and practitioners must:
- Clearly communicate wellness (not medical) applications
- Recommend medical consultation for individuals with health concerns
- Maintain transparency about limitations and contraindications
- Adhere to all applicable regulations and professional standards
